Boots
A poem about class and my mum, that was published as audio/video format by Cast, a theatre in Doncaster, in 2020.
1
The boots are brown
They are leather and bought in Penny Lane
A clothes shop on Main Street
Which opened in the 90s and hasn’t changed much since
1998 or 1999 would have been
When you were last in
With mum then too
5 years of age, now 22
The boots
Look and feel
More expensive
Than any you have ever owned
Any she has ever owned
They are £120 but the shop worker
Strikes a deal for £90
It seems a bargain
They will last you years
It will be an investment.
2.
Dying days of summer
Signed on the dole
On your knees
Scrubbing and cleaning
Your whole body aches
After one shift
Think of how her body aches
Decades of this
Two months after Christmas
A heel
Is coming off
I am very annoyed that the spacing, so crucial to the emotions of my poems, isn't displaying :(
