Motherhood
A poem I wrote in 2020, published in a zine created by Andro and Eve (a queer arts organisation based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire)
I will never
Make a life
Make love to
Make a life
I don’t know
If I even
Want that;
To be loved
I do not want
Tame existence
I want to live
As freely
As all the men
Throughout history
I want to live as a
Means of atonement
For all the women
Throughout my history
Who had to make lives
Whose lives sustained
The cries and pains
Of children and
The egos of men
My grandmother;
A decade pregnant
Sent as a child to
Live with an aunt as
She was not he
Did not warrant the
Focus of her parents
As her brother did
I will not make a life
Because I want to find out
What else I can make
What else I can birth
